The emergence of Islamabad as Pakistan’s capital in 1963 marked a deliberate shift from Karachi, strategically positioning the administrative hub on the Potohar Plateau in the northwest.

Location
14 kms north east of Rawalpindi on the north eastern fringe of the Potohar plateau of the province of Punjab.

Area
Islamabad, located 14 kilometres northeast of Rawalpindi on the Potohar plateau, spans an area of 906.50 square kilometres. The city is divided into five major zones; administrative, diplomatic, residential, educational, industrial, commercial. Zone IV being the largest and Zone I as the primary developed residential area, split into alphabetically labelled sectors covering approximately 2 km × 2 km each.
Climate
Islamabad features an atypical version of a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers accompanied by a monsoon season followed by cool winters.
Transportation
To travel from Islamabad Airport to the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) main campus, you have a few options:
- Taxi or Ride-Hailing Service: You can take a taxi or use a ride-hailing service like Uber or Careem from the airport. These services are readily available at the airport and can take you directly to the AIOU main campus.
- Private Car: If you have arranged for someone to pick you up, or if you have your own car, you can drive from the airport to the AIOU main campus. Be sure to have a map or GPS directions handy to navigate the route.
- Airport Shuttle Service: Some hotels or educational institutions offer shuttle services to and from the airport. There is Metro Bus Service is available from just outside the airport which will drop you at AIOU main campus.
- AIOU will endeavor to provide airport and hotel pick-up and drop-off services, which we will confirm in September 2024P.

Transportation
There are two airports in Istanbul; one is the Istanbul Airport, which is on the European Side, and the other is the Sabiha Gokcen Airport, which is on the Asian Side. You can use the Metro, shuttle buses, a private transfer/shuttle, or a taxi from the airport to the conference venue or hotel.

- Transfer to M7 to Yıldız direction and get off at Mecidiyeköy/Şişli
- Transfer to M2 to Yenikapı direction and get off at Vezneciler İst. Ü. stop
From Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the AAOU 2023 Conference venue by the Metro:
- Get on the M4 and get off at Ayrılık Çeşmesi stop
- Transfer to the Suburban Line Marmaray (B1, B2) to Bahçeşehir direction and get off at Yenikapı stop
- Transfer to M2 and get off at Vezneciler İst. Ü. stop
